For our final project, I partnered with Hannah to create a set of lanterns! We were inspired by the seasonal transition to spring, and we also thought it would be fun to create something for our shared suite next year. I saw a video on making paper out of teabags, and we decided the textured paper would fit the lantern aesthetic. We unfolded teabags and pressed flowers between them, then we made a glue mixture to stick two pieces together. Here are some process photos of the flower papers.
We then used Illustrator to design the lantern frames and branch structure from which the lanterns would hang. We sent these files to the laser cutter to cut out of chipboard, and then we used a mix of wood varnish and acrylic paint to mimic the look of wood. We also used Procreate to design some bird and sun patterns and then laser cut them for the middle lantern to balance with the flowers and continue the spring theme.
After construction, we put artifical candles inside for glow and used string to hang them from the branch. We're excited to decorate our rooms next year with the lanterns :) I also think it's kind of fun that my first and final project both involved lanterns!
